Brazilian companies adopt new work schedules following 6x1 scale changes
Businesses in Brazil, particularly in the commerce and food service sectors, are implementing new work schedules to adapt to changes in labor legislation that end the 6x1 work scale. This scale previously allowed employees to work six consecutive days with one day of rest.
In São Paulo, restaurants located in shopping centers are increasingly adopting the 12x36 model, where employees work 12 hours followed by 36 hours of rest. According to the Brazilian Association of Bars and Restaurants (Abrasel), approximately 30% of shopping mall restaurants already use this scale, compared to 10% in the broader food sector. This model helps manage continuous operations during weekends and holidays.
While the 12x36 scale can reduce costs such as transportation vouchers, it presents challenges including difficulties in replacing staff during absences and restrictions on overtime. Legal experts note that while the model may be compatible with a reduction to a 42-hour work week, further adjustments may be required to meet a 40-hour limit. Other companies are also exploring 5x2 schedules or shorter shifts to maintain productivity and employee well-being.
