Thiago Brennand marries defense lawyer by proxy while incarcerated

Brazilian businessman Thiago Brennand, sentenced to more than 20 years for rape and other violent crimes, was married on 2 July 2026 to his defense attorney Karina Kufa. The ceremony was carried out through a public power of attorney at the civil registry in Potim, São Paulo, allowing the marriage without Brennand leaving the high‑security prison where he has been held since 2023.

Kufa, who joined Brennand’s legal team during the trial, said the relationship developed through conversations in the prison visitation area and that she believes he is innocent. She described their bond as “a passion for words” and emphasized there was no physical contact. The marriage was recorded with a special court‑issued certificate confirming Brennand’s continued detention.

Brennand’s convictions include an eight‑year term for a 2025 rape case, several assault charges, and a court‑ordered compensation of at least R$ 200 000 to a victim. He was extradited from the United Arab Emirates before his sentencing. The case has drawn public attention to the legal provisions allowing proxy marriages for inmates.
