Thiago Brennand, convicted Brazilian businessman, to marry lawyer Karina Kufa from prison

Brazilian entrepreneur Thiago Brennand, serving a prison sentence for multiple sexual‑violence convictions, will wed his defense attorney Karina Kufa by proxy on 2 July. The ceremony will be conducted at a registry office in Potim, São Paulo, because Brennand is in a closed‑regime penitentiary.

Kufa, who gained public attention for representing members of former President Jair Bolsonaro’s family, says the relationship began during legal consultations separated by a glass partition. She told columnist Mônica Bergamo, “Foi uma paixão pelas palavras. Me apaixonei pelo intelecto dele,” adding, “Se Deus quiser, vamos tirá‑lo logo de lá.” The marriage raises ethical questions about lawyer‑client relationships but is legally permissible through a power‑of‑attorney.

Brennand’s convictions total more than ten years of imprisonment, with earlier sentences of eight years for rape later increased. Both parties are 46 years old; Kufa is divorced with two children, and Brennand has one son.
