Brazilian councilors challenge BR‑163 toll rise and push for Calafate safety lane
Councilor Flávio Augusto (PP) of Caarapó announced that municipal legislators will file a joint action against a planned increase in the BR‑163 toll. He said the proposal follows a Tribunal de Contas da União report that highlighted a lack of transparency from the Agência Nacional de Transportes Terrestres on the concession’s restructuring. “Estamos falando de um aumento que afeta diretamente trabalhadores, produtores rurais, empresários e milhares de pessoas que utilizam diariamente a BR‑163,” he warned, urging clearer information on investments and contractual obligations.
In Rio Branco, councilor Matheus Paiva renewed his request for an elevated lane on the Calafate road after a fatal accident in February. The measure, approved by RBTrans, aims to lower vehicle speeds and protect pedestrians, motorists and worshippers using the route. “Nosso objetivo é preservar vidas,” Paiva said, noting the proposal has been sent to the municipal infrastructure secretariat for implementation.
