TRF-1 authorizes access to confidential Tancredo Neves medical records

The Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region (TRF-1) has unanimously authorized the family of former Brazilian President Tancredo Neves to access confidential medical documents regarding his treatment prior to his death in April 1985.

Under the ruling, the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) and the Regional Medical Council of the Federal District (CRM-DF) must provide records and documentation concerning the care Neves received at the Hospital de Base in Brasília. The legal action was initiated by Tancredo Augusto, the former president's son and a lawyer, seeking to clarify the medical circumstances that preceded Neves' death during Brazil's transition to democracy.

Family attorney Juliana Porcaro stated that the decision is a victory for the right to information and the preservation of historical memory. She emphasized that the family intends to analyze the documents before drawing any conclusions regarding the official cause of death, which was recorded as generalized infection.
