Brazilian court orders airline to pay R$ 20,000 for flight delay
A Brazilian court has ordered an airline to pay R$ 20,000 in moral damages to a family following a flight delay of nearly 14 hours. The incident occurred in July 2025 during a return trip from Porto Alegre to Natal, involving a connection at Guarulhos International Airport in São Paulo.
Judge Otto Bismarck Nobre Brenkenfeld, of the 4th Civil Court of Natal, determined that each of the four family members, including two young children, would receive R$ 5,000 in compensation. The family reported that a delay in the first leg caused them to miss their connection. They also cited difficulties in receiving assistance at the airport and issues with hotel transfers and temporary baggage loss.
The airline argued that the initial delay was only 22 minutes and that the missed connection was due to the short interval chosen by the passengers. However, the judge rejected these claims, stating that when a company sells a connecting itinerary, it assumes responsibility for the feasibility of the route and that minor delays are a predictable risk of the aviation business.
