Brazilian Court orders restoration of public beach and mangroves in Alagoas
A Brazilian federal court has ordered a hotel enterprise and its administrator to restore environmentally degraded areas at Praia do Marceneiro in Passo de Camaragibe, Alagoas. The ruling, issued by Judge Raimundo Alves de Campos Júnior, follows a civil public action by the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) regarding the irregular construction of a 105-meter concrete wall on the beach. The structure occupied 279.28 square meters of federal public land without authorization, damaging restinga vegetation and obstructing public access.
In a related legal development involving the Laguna Heliport condominium near Lagoa Mundaú, an entrepreneur was sentenced to prison terms of 1 year and 9 months of reclusion and 7 months and 25 days of detention. The MPF found that 312 square meters of native mangroves and restinga were destroyed to expand a private leisure area for a mansion. The company involved must also execute a plan to remove debris and restore the affected vegetation.
