Brazilian courts and prosecutors address fire safety failures in regional hospitals
Legal and administrative actions are being taken to address critical fire safety deficiencies in regional hospitals across Brazil.
In Xambioá, Tocantins, the Public Ministry has opened an administrative procedure following a Fire Department inspection of the Xambioá Regional Hospital. The report identified grave irregularities, including expired fire extinguishers, faulty hydrant and alarm systems, inadequate emergency lighting, and issues with exit routes and gas centers. The hospital director has been given 15 business days to provide an explanation and a detailed action plan to rectify these structural and sanitary issues.
In Cacoal, Rondônia, the Court of Justice of Rondônia (TJRO) upheld a ruling requiring the state to regularize fire prevention and panic systems at the Cacoal Regional Hospital and the Cacoal Urgency and Emergency Hospital. Following a request by the Public Ministry of Rondônia, the court unanimously denied a state appeal. The state is now obligated to complete all necessary safety adaptations and obtain official fire safety certificates within 180 days of the final judgment.
