Brazilian courts appoint dozens of judges to new positions
On May 18, the Tribunal de Justiça do Rio de Janeiro (TJRJ) held a ceremony to install 32 judges who had been removed under a seniority and merit-based edict. The oath‑taking took place in the Salão Nobre Desembargador José Joaquim da Fonseca Passos, with TJRJ president Ricardo Couto de Castro and other magistrates on hand. The judges, ranging from those assigned by antiquity to those selected for merit, will begin their duties on 1 June 2026.
The same day, the Tribunal Regional Eleitoral of Mato Grosso (TRE‑MT) swore in Judge Eduardo Calmon de Almeida Cezar as a full member for the 2026‑2028 term, replacing Luiz Otávio Pereira Marques. The ceremony was led by President Desembargadora Serly Marcondes Alves and featured representatives from the executive, legislative and military sectors. Calmon highlighted the Electoral Court’s role in safeguarding free and transparent elections amid growing political polarization.
