Brazilian courts issue rulings in separate homicide cases
In Italva, a jury has acquitted a man accused of a 2019 homicide at Morro da Caixa D'água. Following a trial lasting over ten hours, jurors accepted the defense's argument of third-party self-defense. The defendant had previously surrendered to police and confessed to the stabbing, but the jury ultimately ruled in his favor.
In Rio Branco, the Court of Justice of Acre (TJ-AC) has upheld a decision to send lawyer Aluísio Veras de Almeida Neto to a jury trial. He faces charges of simple homicide regarding the death of David Weverton Matos de Araújo, whose body was found at a motel in July 2025. The defense sought to annul the process, citing restrictions on defense rights and arguing self-defense, but the court ruled there is sufficient evidence to proceed to a jury trial.
