Brazil prosecutors charge man for femicide of Venezuelan immigrant in Erechim

The Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Sul (MPRS) has charged a 29-year-old man for the qualified femicide, bodily injury, and threat of his former partner, Evelin Del Carmen Betanco Vera, in Erechim. The victim, a 27-year-old Venezuelan immigrant, was killed by multiple stab wounds on October 7, 2026, after the assailant entered her residence in violation of an urgent protective order.

Prosecutor Fabricio Gustavo Allegretti stated the crime was motivated by jealousy and a sense of possession following the victim's decision to end the relationship. The attack occurred in the presence of the couple's two young children, aged three and four. The indictment also includes a prior assault from August 2026, where the man allegedly struck the victim with a cell phone.

In addition to the homicide charges, the MPRS is requesting the loss of parental rights regarding the couple's children and a minimum indemnity for the victim's successors. Due to the victim's family residing in Venezuela, prosecutors have requested the early collection of testimonies from her parents and sister to facilitate legal proceedings.
