Brazilian courts pursue maximum penalties in animal cruelty cases in Rio Grande do Sul and Acre

In Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, the Public Ministry is seeking the harshest sentence for a man accused of torturing, mutilating and killing cats, as well as threatening witnesses. At a recent instruction hearing, nine witnesses were called and the defendant, who is currently in a therapeutic community in Paraná, will be questioned via videoconference. Prosecutors emphasize the cruelty, including recorded videos of the animals in agony, and request the maximum penalty under the law.

In Tarauacá, Acre, police arrested a man identified by the initials J.S.C. after a neighbor reported hearing distress cries from a dog. Officers found the suspect inside a former public building, charged him with animal abuse and possible illegal occupation, and transferred him to the civil police for investigation. Both cases illustrate intensified legal action against animal cruelty in Brazil.
