Caju de Leitores indigenous literature festival begins in Bahia
The 5th edition of the Caju de Leitores, Brazil’s first indigenous literature festival, begins on September 2, 2026, at Oca Tururim in Aldeia Xandó, Porto Seguro, Bahia. Themed ‘Um Manifesto de Bichos’, the event aims to give voice to animals through storytelling, literary encounters, and educational activities. Notable participants include Argentine indigenous activist Mariela Tulián, the festival’s first Latin American guest, alongside Brazilian figures such as Vanessa Guarani Ratton, Auritha Tabajara, and host Sairi Pataxó.
Other regional cultural events are also scheduled for September. The Vozes do Velho Chico festival will take place in Piranhas on September 4 and 5, featuring music, cinema, and poetry along the São Francisco River. Additionally, the Quebramar Festival is launching its 8th edition with educational workshops in schools across the state of Amapá, focusing on storytelling and media activism.
In Brasília, the 9th edition of ‘A Bahia em Brasília’ will feature singer Thiago Nascimento on September 5, celebrating Bahian music and gastronomy. Meanwhile, the Grupo Ojú-Òrun is set to perform in João Pessoa on September 12, presenting a show that integrates percussion, dance, and poetry to celebrate Afro-Brazilian and indigenous cultures.
