Brazilian cultural programs open applications for theater prizes and residencies
Several cultural initiatives in Brazil are opening applications for theatrical development and research.
The FELUMA/AML Prize for Theatrical Texts is accepting entries from authors in Minas Gerais. The competition aims to promote contemporary dramaturgy and literary creation. Three winning texts will be published in a commemorative book scheduled for release in December 2026, with the first-place winner receiving R$ 5,000.00. Submissions must be original works in Portuguese and cannot be generated by artificial intelligence. The deadline for registration is September 20, 2026.
Additionally, the University of São Paulo (USP) Theater is hosting the 8th edition of the Diaspóricas: Artistic Residencies program from August 26 to 29. This edition, themed ‘Preto no Preto – Criar Imagens é Criar Imaginários’, focuses on Afro-diasporic theatricalities and black imagery on stage. The laboratory uses practical exercises based on Augusto Boal’s ‘Aesthetics of the Oppressed’ to explore how stage materiality can challenge historical stereotypes. Applications are open until August 19.
