Brazilian dentist warns when white tongue needs professional care

A white coating on the tongue is often caused by the buildup of food debris, dead cells and bacteria on the papillae, especially when oral hygiene is insufficient. Isabelle Schalch de Oliveira Campos, coordinator of the Dentistry program at Faculdade Anhanguera, explains that the condition can also stem from dry mouth, smoking, excessive alcohol, certain medications, fungal infections such as oral candidiasis, recent fever, prolonged antibiotic use, nutritional deficiencies, stress or immune system changes.

While the discoloration is usually temporary and can be resolved with proper cleaning, persistent white tongue that lasts more than two weeks, causes pain, burning, difficulty swallowing, develops sores, bleeding, or does not improve with hygiene measures should prompt a dental consultation. “Nem toda língua branca é motivo para preocupação, mas alterações persistentes devem ser investigadas,” Campos advises.
