Brazilian deputies show disconnect from voter priorities on inequality and direct democracy

A study by INCT-ReDem reveals a significant gap between the priorities of Brazilian citizens and their elected federal deputies. Based on interviews with over 1,500 citizens and 170 deputies, the research indicates that while voters view the reduction of poverty and inequality as essential components of democracy, many parliamentarians treat these issues as secondary or negotiable policy agendas.

The study also highlights a rejection of direct democratic mechanisms among lawmakers. While approximately 32.8% of the population considers civil liberties, wealth redistribution, and direct participation (such as plebiscites and referendums) to be equally vital, deputies are more likely to prioritize individual mandates and reject mechanisms that would transfer decision-making power back to the people.
