Brazil: Civil society and public servants issue manifestos ahead of elections
Ahead of the second round of Brazil's general elections, various civil society groups and public servant entities have released manifestos addressing democratic stability and social rights.
A democracy manifesto, organized by the Arns Commission and the XI de Agosto Academic Center of USP, has gathered over 600 signatures. Signatories include retired Supreme Federal Court (STF) ministers Celso de Mello, Rosa Weber, and Antonio Cezar Peluso, as well as legal experts and activists. The document advocates for the independence of the three branches of government and the preservation of the constitutional order.
Simultaneously, dozens of entities representing federal public servants issued a manifesto warning against administrative reforms that could compromise job stability, technical independence, and public service autonomy. The groups expressed concern over potential salary freezes, restrictions on new hires, and mass layoffs. The manifesto specifically cited the administration of Argentine President Javier Milei—which includes a voluntary dismissal plan affecting up to 21,000 servants—as a cautionary example of the social and institutional costs of severe public sector cuts.
Additionally, a coalition of over 600 organizations representing children and adolescents emphasized the need for continuous public policies to protect their rights and prevent violence, urging candidates to prioritize these commitments.
