Brazil inflation rises 0.70% in September as electricity costs surge

Brazil's IPCA-15 preliminary inflation index rose 0.70% in September, reversing the 0.40% deflation recorded in August. This increase marks the highest monthly rate since April. The 12-month accumulated inflation reached 4.47%, up from 4.24% in August.

The primary driver of this acceleration was the Housing group, which rose 2.07%. Within this category, residential electricity prices surged 7.42%, representing the largest individual impact on the index. This spike is attributed to the end of the Itaipu Bonus, a credit previously applied to electricity bills that had caused a 6.25% drop in August.

Other contributing factors included a 0.60% rise in the Transport group, driven by a 9.82% increase in airfares, and a 0.96% rise in Personal Expenses. The Food and Beverages group also returned to positive territory with a 0.40% increase, influenced by significant price hikes in tomatoes (20.76%), rice (2.39%), and meats (1.30%).
