Brazil economy: Retail sales rise as corporate Q2 results show mixed performance
Brazilian retail sales rose 0.5% in June compared to May, according to IBGE data, exceeding market expectations. The retail sector saw a 2.9% increase compared to June 2025 and grew 1.9% in the first half of 2026. Growth was driven by segments such as personal and domestic goods, supermarkets, and furniture, while books and apparel saw declines.
Corporate earnings for the second quarter of 2026 showed mixed results across various sectors. Ultrapar reported a 46% increase in net profit to R$ 1.7 billion, aided by a recovering fuel market. SulAmérica saw EBITDA grow 53.4% to R$ 612.1 million, driven by an expanding beneficiary base. Armac reported a 19.3% revenue increase, reaching R$ 586.2 million.
Conversely, some companies faced challenges. Compass reported a 19% drop in net profit to R$ 287.16 million, attributed to higher depreciation and financial results. MRV recorded a consolidated net loss of R$ 626 million due to accounting write-downs related to its US operation, Resia, although its Brazilian operations remained profitable. Ser Educacional reported a 30.7% increase in net profit to R$ 106 million despite regulatory pressures on distance learning.
