Brazilian Electoral Justice denies André Fufuca's request to remove article

Brazil's Electoral Justice has denied a request by Senate candidate André Fufuca (PP) to remove an online article written by journalist and professor Ed Wilson Araújo. The court issued a preliminary injunction to keep the text, titled “Fufucar: a miséria da política no Maranhão”, available on the internet.

The article, published in August, critiques Fufuca’s political trajectory, his family and political connections, and his role within the ‘Centrão’ and conservative political spheres in Maranhão. Fufuca had specifically contested information regarding his father’s political history and sought to prevent the journalist from republishing the disputed sections.

In his ruling, auxiliary electoral judge José Nilo Ribeiro Filho stated there were insufficient elements to justify the immediate removal of the content. The decision emphasized the importance of freedom of expression and the right to information, particularly regarding political criticism. Following the unfavorable ruling, Fufuca’s defense requested the withdrawal of the representation and the dismissal of the case.
