Brazilian Experts Emphasize Humanized Elder Care and Active Neighborhoods
A geriatrician at Hospital Mater Dei Santa Genoveva stresses that aging populations require a shift from disease treatment to humanized care that supports both seniors and their caregivers. Simple environmental changes—such as installing bathroom grab bars, improving lighting, removing loose rugs, and preserving familiar routines—can prevent falls and maintain autonomy for older adults.
A separate study of 6,717 Brazilian seniors found that perceiving the neighborhood as conducive to physical activity is linked to higher life‑satisfaction. About 60% reported high satisfaction, and 67% viewed their surroundings as pleasant for exercise. Positive perceptions increased satisfaction prevalence by 21% after adjusting for socioeconomic and health factors, underscoring the importance of accessible urban design for healthy aging.
