Peritoneal cancer, a rare tumor affecting the abdominal membrane, is projected to account for a significant share of Brazil's cancer burden, with the National Cancer Institute (INCA) estimating up to 518,000 new non‑skin cases annually by 2028. Specialists note that the disease gained attention through high‑profile patients such as TV presenter Hebe Camargo and Dudu Braga, son of singer Roberto Carlos.

Dr. Arnaldo Urbano Ruiz explains that advances since the 1990s—particularly the pioneering work of Dr. Sugarbaker—have shifted peritoneal carcinomatosis from a fatal diagnosis to a condition treatable with cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). Selected patients can achieve long‑term survival or cure when treated in high‑volume centers by multidisciplinary teams of surgeons and oncologists. Additional options include systemic chemotherapy, immunotherapy and intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC). Early diagnosis remains challenging; symptoms range from abdominal discomfort and distension to hernias and changes in bowel habits.
