Brazilian exporters face stricter international food safety and inspection standards
Brazilian fruit exporters face increasing pressure to meet stringent international standards regarding traceability, sustainability, and food safety. While Brazil is among the top three global fruit producers, it currently ranks 23rd in international supply. Waldyr Promicia, president of Abrafrutas, noted that expanding market share requires adapting to buyer demands, such as mandatory certifications like Global GAP.
Simultaneously, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced intentions to expand unannounced inspections of foreign facilities that manufacture food, essential medicines, and other products destined for the United States. The FDA aims to align foreign oversight with domestic standards, noting that unannounced visits provide a more accurate view of routine manufacturing conditions. The agency conducts approximately 3,000 foreign inspections annually across more than 90 countries.
