Brazilian Federal Police investigate missing child's potential link to U.S. rescue operation

The Brazilian Federal Police (PF) are coordinating with authorities in the United States to investigate the disappearance of José Arthur Sousa Barros. The child, who was one year and six months old at the time, disappeared on March 26 in the rural area of Eldorado dos Carajás, Pará.

The investigation is specifically looking to determine if the boy is among the 163 children and adolescents rescued in Florida during the ‘Statewide Shield’ operation held between August 17 and 21. While there were initially no indications that the child had left Brazil, the family's defense requested the cross-referencing of data to investigate potential links to child trafficking networks.

The PF attaché in Washington and the Consulate General of Brazil in Miami are involved in the inquiry to facilitate direct contact with U.S. authorities. The investigation into the disappearance has been transferred from the Eldorado dos Carajás Police Station to the Homicide Division in Marabá to utilize more specialized resources.
