Brazilian festivals gain cultural heritage recognitions

The government of Tocantins officially declared the Dança Suça, an Afro‑Brazilian quin­quilombola dance from Natividade, and the annual Festejo do Senhor do Bonfim religious celebration as state intangible cultural heritage. In parallel, the federal House committee approved Project Law 5.810/2023, sponsored by Deputy Gisela Simona, to recognize the Festança de Vila Bela da Santíssima Trindade in Mato Grosso as a Brazilian intangible cultural heritage. The centuries‑old festival blends Catholic devotion with Afro‑Brazilian dances such as the Congo and Chorado, and is linked to the historic Quilombo do Quariterê, underscoring its cultural and racial significance.
