Brazilian football clubs face bribery allegations and strategic investment shifts

Allegations of bribery have surfaced regarding the Brazilian football club Corinthians. Carlos Teixeira, CEO of SAFIEL, claimed in a podcast interview that Maurício Chamati, founder of Mercado Bitcoin, had a sponsorship relationship with Corinthians during the Duílio Monteiro Alves administration that was terminated because officials allegedly requested bribes.

Questions have been raised regarding why Chamati did not report these incidents to authorities at the time, noting his subsequent political support for various club leadership figures. The claims suggest the alleged misconduct occurred around the time of contract negotiations.

In separate news, Gabriel de Alba, an investor in Botafogo’s SAF, is reportedly viewing the football club as a ‘trophy asset.’ Digital influencer Manoel Thiago suggests that de Alba’s investment is intended to build political influence and credibility in Brazil to facilitate larger industrial investments in other sectors.
