Brazilian football experts discuss academy finances and recruitment errors
João Paulo Sampaio, Palmeiras' youth academy coordinator, has highlighted the financial importance of utilizing homegrown talent to manage club payrolls. Speaking on the YouTube channel Quadrado Mágico, Sampaio noted that while player sales are beneficial, the primary advantage of academy players lies in their lower salary costs compared to veteran signings.
He used Santos FC as a cautionary example, noting the club's high monthly payroll of approximately R$ 30 million and its struggle to meet financial commitments. Sampaio pointed out that while a youth player like Chermont might earn between R$ 50,000 and R$ 60,000, a famous veteran signing can command salaries around R$ 1 million, significantly impacting the wage bill.
In a separate discussion regarding Palmeiras, commentator Walter Casagrande criticized the club's decision to sign attacker Paulinho. Casagrande suggested there was an error in the recruitment process, citing the player's recurring injuries and the need for multiple surgeries shortly after arrival. Meanwhile, reports indicate Paulinho is recovering from an adductor injury and may return to training ahead of the match against Bahia.
