Brazilian football qualification rules could expand Libertadores slots

The number of Brazilian clubs qualifying for the Copa Libertadores via the Brasileirão could expand to a 'G9' scenario due to recent changes by the CBF and potential continental titles. While the CBF reduced the direct slots from the league from six to five, additional spots can be generated if Brazilian clubs win the Libertadores or Sudamericana. Because champions qualify through CONMEBOL rather than their domestic league slots, they can open up extra positions in the Brazilian standings.

Furthermore, the Copa do Brasil finalists can influence the final tally. If both finalists have already secured qualification through the league or continental titles, additional slots may become available. Currently, clubs like Palmeiras, Atlético-MG, and Vasco are involved in multiple competitions that could impact these numbers.

In terms of historical participation, Palmeiras leads Brazilian clubs with 25 appearances in the Libertadores, followed by São Paulo with 22. On a continental level, Uruguayan clubs Nacional and Peñarol, along with Paraguay's Olimpia, hold the highest number of total participations.
