Brazilian government plans leadership changes at major state-owned banks

The administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is evaluating leadership changes across several major state-owned enterprises as part of a broader ministerial restructuring.

At Banco do Nordeste (BNB), the presidency of Paulo Câmara is expected to end, with a complete overhaul of the board anticipated. Proposed vacancies are expected to be distributed among regional governors, PT senators, and members of the Centrão. Additionally, the Ministry of Finance is reviewing bidding processes for the Crediamigo and Agroamigo microcredit programs due to concerns regarding the economic-financial qualification of selected entities.

Regarding Banco do Brasil (BB), Tarciana Medeiros is expected to depart her role following a significant decline in profits. The bank reported a profit of R$ 20.7 billion in 2025, a 45.4% decrease from the previous year, driven by agribusiness defaults and new accounting rules.

At Caixa Econômica Federal, the presidency of Carlos Vieira, originally an appointment linked to Arthur Lira, is under review. While the President evaluates Vieira's performance positively, his continued tenure may depend on the administration's need to build a governing base in Congress.
