Brazilian health experts shift focus from weight loss to muscle mass and body composition

Recent conferences in 2026 highlighted a paradigm shift in Brazil's approach to obesity and ageing care, emphasizing body composition over simple weight loss. Endocrinologists note that preserving muscle mass and reducing visceral and ectopic fat are more predictive of cardiovascular health, functional ability and mortality than the number of kilograms shed. GLP‑1 and GIP receptor agonists, alongside strength training, adequate protein intake and multidisciplinary monitoring, are now recommended to safeguard muscle while achieving weight reduction.

Parallel guidance stresses the importance of strengthening muscle, especially in the lower limbs, to combat sarcopenia and maintain independence in older adults. Experts advise individualized resistance exercise programs for people of any age, citing evidence that even centenarians can gain muscle. Maintaining muscle strength reduces fall risk, supports bone health and prolongs autonomy, making it a critical component of public health strategies for Brazil's ageing population.
