Brazilian health experts warn of risks from prolonged sitting
A study published in the British medical journal The Lancet found that sitting for more than eight hours a day raises the risk of death by about 10% and increases the likelihood of vascular conditions such as varicose veins and deep‑vein thrombosis. The research, which examined reports from the United States, Western Europe and Australia, concluded that one hour of physical activity is needed for each hour spent seated to offset these effects.
Brazilian specialists echo the findings. Vascular surgeon Dra. Aline Lamaita of Hospital Albert Einstein recommends simple measures: move the feet each hour, stand and walk regularly, and consider compression stockings for those prone to vascular problems. Eduardo Netto, technical director of Bodytech Company, adds that breaking up sitting time every 30–60 minutes with light movements, stretches or short walks is crucial, as regular exercise alone does not fully counteract prolonged inactivity.
