Brazilian High School Exchange Programs Surge to US and Canada
Interest in high‑school exchange programs abroad among Brazilian families has risen sharply in recent years.
The Open Doors 2025 report places Brazil tenth among countries sending students to U.S. institutions, with 17,277 students. Data from the Brazilian Association of Exchange Agencies (Belta) show that about 31% of Brazilian exchange students choose Canada and roughly 26% select the United States.
Marina Jendiroba, director‑executive of Intercultural, says families are planning earlier for university studies overseas, viewing these programs as a way to broaden future opportunities and improve language fluency. She adds that participants often return more autonomous, confident, proactive and better able to adapt to different cultures.
The international high‑school model allows students to study part or all of secondary education abroad, usually living with a host family or in student residences. The most sought‑after destinations are the United States and Canada, followed by Ireland, England, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand.
