Brazilian home fires spark local solidarity campaigns

A fire ignited by a candle left burning in a bedroom of a home in Arapuá, Minas Gerais, destroyed a bedroom and bathroom and damaged the house's electrical and plumbing systems on Thursday morning. The homeowners were away, no one was injured, and neighbors broke a window to help contain the blaze. Three water trucks from the municipal government and a local dairy assisted the fire brigade, and residents launched a donation drive to help the couple rebuild and replace lost belongings.

In Cabrobó, Pernambuco, a separate fire started after an electrical fault caused a plug to spark, quickly engulfing a bedroom while the resident’s daughter and grandson escaped. The homeowner, known locally as “Michelle que lava e passa,” lost furniture, documents and personal items. Neighbors intervened promptly, limiting damage, and family members have organized a solidarity campaign, offering PIX donations to support her recovery.
