Former Bahia councilor George Passos sentenced to 36-year term for killing pregnant wife

George Passos de Santana, a former councilor (known as George Breu) from Santo Estevão, Bahia, was convicted by a popular jury in Feira de Santana of femicide and unlawful abortion after he shot his wife, Jéssica Regina Macedo Carmo, who was nine months pregnant, on 5 February 2022. The jury found him guilty of homicide, abortion caused by a third person and illegal possession of a firearm, applying the aggravating factor of using a resource that prevented the victim’s defense. The trial lasted more than 20 hours, began on Thursday 23 July 2026 and concluded on Friday 24 July 2026. He received a prison term of 35‑36 years, plus one year for the firearm offense, to be served initially in a closed‑regime facility. The case attracted significant regional attention in Bahia.
