Brazil promotes organ donation awareness during Setembro Verde

During 'Setembro Verde', a month dedicated to organ and tissue donation awareness, various Brazilian institutions are highlighting the importance of donation and addressing common misconceptions.

In Rio de Janeiro, the state ranks second nationally in family authorizations for organ donation. This progress is attributed to specialized professional training and the implementation of new technologies, such as the Renal Perfusion Center, which aims to increase the availability of kidneys for transplants.

In Porto Alegre, the Hospital de Pronto Socorro (HPS) held its second seminar on organ and tissue donation to educate healthcare professionals. The hospital reported 18 donors in the first eight months of 2026, surpassing its total for the entire year of 2025.

Medical experts emphasize that age is not a barrier for living donors, provided they undergo clinical evaluation. Additionally, institutions like Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Araraquara are working to clarify myths regarding the process and stressing that in Brazil, explicit family authorization is required for donation from deceased individuals.
