Ibovespa falls to monthly low amid corporate earnings and US payroll impact
Brazil's Ibovespa index fell 1.73% to 172,513.42 points on August 7, 2026, marking its worst weekly performance since May with a 3.08% decline. The drop was driven by heavyweights in the financial and energy sectors, notably Petrobras, which saw its shares fall following reports that no extraordinary dividends would be distributed, despite a significant increase in quarterly profits.
Retailers also faced heavy selling pressure after reporting disappointing quarterly results. Lojas Renner shares dropped roughly 8% after cutting its 2026 revenue growth forecast, and Magazine Luiza shares fell following a reported net loss of R$ 50.4 million for the second quarter.
Conversely, the U.S. dollar weakened against the Brazilian real, closing at approximately R$ 5.08. This decline was triggered by a weak U.S. employment report (payroll) showing a loss of 23,000 jobs in July, which fueled expectations that the Federal Reserve may maintain current interest rates. Despite the market volatility, the Brazilian stock market saw a net entry of R$ 2.558 billion in foreign capital during July, an 81% increase compared to the same period last year.
