Brazilian Indigenous Festivals Highlight Tradition, Sports and Sustainable Practices

The second edition of the Festival of Culture and Indigenous Games of the Xingu opened in Altamira, Pará, on July 24, drawing thousands of spectators. Fourteen indigenous groups participated in traditional sports such as the log race (corrida de tora), tug‑of‑war, football, canoeing, swimming and archery, while the opening ceremony featured the lighting of a ceremonial fire and performances of music, body painting and feathered headdresses. The festival, which runs through July 26, also offers regional cuisine, crafts and cultural exhibitions that showcase the heritage of the Xingu peoples.

From July 31 to August 2, the La Madre immersion took place at the Templo das Águas in Caldas, Minas Gerais. The event combined sustainability discussions with indigenous knowledge, featuring Huni Kuin elder Ixã Txaná from the Amazon. Participants attended a cacao ceremony honoring Pachamapa, forest‑bath walks, workshops on rapé, Tai Chi, sound healing and circular dances, and were served vegan‑vegetarian meals. The program aimed to promote environmental responsibility, cultural preservation and reforestation initiatives led by the Huni Kuin community.
