Brazilian Intelligence Agency trains municipal officials on school violence prevention

The Brazilian Intelligence Agency (ABIN) conducted a 40‑day online training programme on the prevention of violent extremist attacks in schools, running from 6 May to 11 June in Cuiabá. Sixty representatives from twelve municipalities in the state of Mato Grosso attended, including Alberto dos Santos, coordinator of Protection and Civil Defense in Sorriso, and municipal traffic guard Vilson Cordeiro, who leads educational outreach.

During the course participants exchanged information, practiced inter‑institutional coordination and enhanced analytical skills, culminating in tabletop exercises that simulated responses to extreme scenarios. The programme, the first of its kind aimed specifically at municipal officials, follows ABIN’s "Guide for the Prevention of Violent Extremist Attacks in Schools" and seeks to improve detection of risk signals, response protocols and prevention strategies across local education, social assistance and public safety agencies.

ABIN director‑general Luiz Fernando Corrêa emphasized that a single school attack anywhere in Brazil impacts the entire society, underscoring the national relevance of the training. The agency cited 2025 statistics: three school attacks resulting in eight injuries and one death, 280 reported threats and 22 attacks thwarted through coordinated intelligence and security efforts.
