Brazilian Journalist Luan Araújo Imprisoned Over Unpaid Defamation Fine

A São Paulo court ordered the open‑regime imprisonment of journalist Luan Araújo after he failed to pay a R$ 2,216.30 fine imposed for a defamation conviction. The penalty stems from an article in which Araújo criticized former deputy Carla Zambelli, calling her part of an “extreme‑right seita.” Media organisations, including the Comissão de Jornalistas pela Igualdade Racial (Cojira‑SP), the Sindicato dos Jornalistas Profissionais (SJSP) and the Federação Nacional dos Jornalistas (Conajira/Fenaj), publicly repudiated the decision, citing concerns for press freedom.

Araújo, unemployed and facing psychological stress, said he is unable to raise the money and has launched a crowdfunding effort while considering legal action for moral damages. The case recalls Zambelli’s own legal troubles: she was convicted by the Supreme Federal Court for illegal weapon possession and illegal coercion after an armed confrontation with Araújo in 2022, and her attempted extradition from Italy was later cancelled.
