Brazilian journalists win awards for sustainability and community reporting

Brazilian journalists have received recognition for reporting on sustainability and community development. Ed Wilson Araújo won first place in the Text Journalism category at the state level of the 13th Sebrae Journalism Award. His winning report, published by Agência Tambor, focuses on the Bar da Hora community in the Lençóis Maranhenses region. The piece highlights a community-based tourism model that integrates local economic activities, such as artisanal fishing and small commerce, with environmental preservation initiatives like composting and biofertilizer production.

In international news, journalist Ariosto Mesquita earned second place in the Sustainability category at the IFAJ Star Prize 2026 in Croatia. His report, published in Feed & Food magazine, examines how carbon credits are already providing financial remuneration to Brazilian cattle ranchers. This marks the second consecutive year Mesquita has been recognized by the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists for his work on sustainability in beef production, following a previous award in Nairobi.
