Benedito Gonçalves assumes role as National Corregedor of Justice

Minister Benedito Gonçalves of the Superior Tribunal de Justiça (STJ) has taken office as the National Corregedor of Justice for the 2026-2028 term. Appointed by the Senate, Gonçalves succeeds Mauro Campbell Marques at the National Council of Justice (CNJ). In his inaugural speech, he emphasized the need for a judiciary that remains close to society and warned that technology should not replace the human presence of judges in their local jurisdictions. He also committed to conducting disciplinary investigations with technical rigor and integrity.

Separately, the Court of Justice of São Paulo (TJSP) has revoked the retirement benefits of former judge Arthur Del Guercio Filho. The decision follows a conviction for administrative improbity related to allegations from 2013 that he solicited bribes from lawyers in exchange for favorable rulings. This revocation follows a recent shift in legal interpretation by the Supreme Federal Court (STF), which allows for more stringent punishments, including the suspension of payments, for magistrates found guilty of serious misconduct.
