Unimed Tubarão AI cuts patient enrollment from 100 to 10 days

Unimed Tubarão, a medical cooperative in southern Santa Catarina, Brazil, deployed an artificial‑intelligence solution developed with the data‑management firm level. The system automates the analysis of clinical and assistance data, reducing the time needed to identify and enroll patients in care programs from about 100 days to just 10 days – a 90 % cut.

Using the AI tool on a database of more than 50,000 beneficiaries, the platform flagged 4,775 patients as eligible for follow‑up, including 543 classified as high‑risk. Faster identification enables earlier interventions, which the partners say can improve patient outcomes and lower costly hospitalisations. Level estimates the speed‑up could save roughly R$ 8 million by avoiding high‑complexity procedures and claims.

The initiative comes amid rising costs in Brazil’s supplemental health sector, with the Medical‑Hospital Cost Variation Index (VCMH) climbing above general inflation. Jane Marilusa Silva, nursing coordinator of Unimed’s Viver Bem program, noted that the previous manual process could take up to three months, whereas the AI now locates patients instantly. Mariana Gaspers, CEO of level, highlighted early identification as a management strategy that reduces admissions and high‑cost procedures.
