Brazilian lawmaker Carlos Jordy named PL Senate candidate for 2026
The Liberal Party (PL) announced that federal deputy Carlos Jordy of Niterói will run for the Senate in the 2026 elections. The decision follows the withdrawal of former Belford Roxo mayor Márcio Canella, who had been slated to be the party's second Senate candidate. With Canella’s exit, the PL now fields a "pure‑blood" ticket of two Senate candidates – Jordy and incumbent senator Carlos Portinho – alongside gubernatorial candidate Douglas Ruas.
Jordy, who had earlier indicated he would seek re‑election to the Chamber of Deputies, received public endorsement from Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who described him as fully aligned with Bolsonaro‑aligned right‑wing policies. Jordy reiterated his commitment to the party’s agenda, including tougher criminal legislation and opposition to abortion and drug liberalisation, and pledged to support the election of Douglas Ruas as governor and Flávio Bolsonaro as president.
