Flávio Bolsonaro contests 2026 election results FAST-MOVING

Following the re-election of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro has announced plans to challenge the results through legal channels. Bolsonaro initially refused to recognize the outcome, citing a Supreme Court decision by Justice Cristiano Zanin to extend voting hours by two hours in certain regions. He argued this measure created inequality and altered the rules mid-process.

While Bolsonaro initially called for the annulment of the election, he has since shifted strategy toward filing an 'Ação de Investigação Judicial Eleitoral' to seek the disqualification of Lula da Silva's winning ticket, alleging campaign abuses.

Internal friction has emerged within the Liberal Party (PL). Some party members have attributed Flávio Bolsonaro's defeat in Minas Gerais to Deputy Nikolas Ferreira, alleging that Ferreira's campaign focus was insufficiently concentrated in the state. Meanwhile, Ferreira has publicly downplayed the possibility of an annulment, describing the chances as 'practically zero' and urging supporters to avoid impulsive public demonstrations.

Additionally, Flávio Bolsonaro reported being summoned by the Federal Police to surrender his passports and was prohibited from leaving Brazil, a measure reportedly ordered by Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
