Brazil Senate to vote on ending 6‑day work schedule in August
The Brazilian Senate will resume debate in August on PEC 221/2019, a constitutional amendment that seeks to end the 6×1 work schedule – six days of work followed by one day off – and reduce the weekly work limit from 44 to 40 hours without cutting salaries. The proposal also introduces a gradual shift to a 5×2 schedule and includes a transition period for companies and workers.
Senate President Davi Alcolumbre ordered the amendment to be examined by the committees. Government leader Senator Randolfe Rodrigues called ending the 6×1 schedule an “absolute priority.” Senators Paulo Paim and Rogerio Marinho expressed hope that the vote will occur in August, while other senators warned about holding the vote during the election period. The voting windows are set for 10‑14 August and 31 August‑3 September, matching the schedule announced for the Chamber of Deputies.
The Chamber of Deputies approved the amendment in May, and Deputy Hildo Rocha highlighted the approval, noting the expected benefits for workers’ health, family life and productivity. The Senate’s discussion will take place after the parliamentary recess, with meetings already held with trade unions and employer representatives.
