Brazilian literature explores themes of female resilience and domesticity

New literary works in Brazil are exploring themes of female resilience, domesticity, and historical memory.

In “O coração é desses pormenores”, author Ana Paula Moreira examines the lives of Sílvia and her daughter Lúcia. The novel depicts a cycle of grief and social isolation through the lens of repetitive domestic labor and the quiet struggles of women navigating poverty and loss across generations.

Similarly, Keila Prado Costa’s debut novel, “Filhos das Dores”, draws inspiration from real history to reconstruct the life of an anonymous woman from Minas Gerais. The story follows a woman who survived domestic violence and raised many children alone, reflecting broader historical shifts in Brazil, such as the rapid urbanization between 1960 and 1980, and addressing the enduring issue of domestic violence.
