Brazilian Mafia War Sparks Wave of Violence in Bolivia's Santa Cruz Region

In early August 2026 a surge of gang‑related killings swept the Santa Cruz department of Bolivia, linked to a conflict between Brazilian criminal groups Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and Comando Vermelho over control of a cocaine‑trafficking corridor. Incidents reported included a mass shooting at the Campo Nuevo cattle farm, an ambush that killed sub‑lieutenant Yerson Salazar, the discovery of decapitated bodies, attacks on Brazilian nationals in Puerto Suárez and a veterinarian in San Ignacio de Velasco, and a daylight execution on a city avenue. Authorities recorded eleven deaths in one account and nine in another, with victims ranging from civilians to police officers.

The Bolivian government said the violence reflects a broader war between the two Brazilian mafias expanding into the Andean country. Since President Rodrigo Paz took office, 17 international drug‑lord leaders have been expelled, dozens of aircraft seized, and large quantities of cocaine and marijuana confiscated. Minister of Government Marco Antonio Oviedo announced that Brazil will open police offices in Bolivia to enhance cooperation against the groups.
