Brazil man travels 2,000 km to meet AI-generated romantic partner

Edimar Rocha Martins, a 49-year-old bricklayer from Maranhão, Brazil, sold his belongings and traveled over 2,000 kilometers to Belo Horizonte to meet a woman he met on social media. Upon arrival, he discovered that the persona, known as Jéssica Oliveira or Jéssica Fazendeira, was an artificial intelligence-generated character.

The TikTok profile, which had approximately 300,000 followers, featured professional videos of a woman promising a life of financial security and a home on a farm. The account administrator later admitted the persona was created using AI to drive engagement and commercial monetization, denying any direct personal contact with Martins.

Left without funds, Martins sought assistance from the Belo Horizonte City Hall. Social services provided him with food, hygiene access, and a bus ticket to return to his home region in Tocantins. The incident has raised concerns regarding the lack of regulation surrounding AI-generated digital identities and the potential for electronic fraud.
