Brazilian man travels 1,200 miles to meet AI-generated persona

Edimar Rocha Martins, a 49-year-old Brazilian man, sold all his possessions to fund a 1,200-mile journey across Brazil to meet Jéssica Oliveira, a woman he had been communicating with online since 2020.

Upon arriving in Belo Horizonte, Martins discovered that no one knew Oliveira. After seeking help from locals and radio stations, he realized the woman did not exist. Following the incident, an account associated with the persona posted a video admitting that the character was AI-generated.

Martins, who reported that Oliveira had even offered to help with travel costs, eventually ran out of money and sought assistance from local authorities. The municipal welfare department provided him with food, a shower, and assistance in purchasing a ticket to return home, while also providing guidance on the risks of social media scams.
