Brazilian man travels 2,000 km to meet AI-generated romantic partner

Edimar Rocha Martins, a 49-year-old Brazilian bricklayer, traveled over 2,000 kilometers from Imperatriz, Maranhão, to Belo Horizonte after being deceived by a virtual romantic interest. Motivated by promises of marriage and financial stability, Martins traveled for more than 36 hours by bus to meet a woman he met on social media platforms including Facebook and Kwai.

Upon arrival, Martins discovered that the individual, known online as Jessica Oliveira or Jessica Fazendeira, did not exist in reality. Investigations revealed that the profile, which boasted over 300,000 followers, utilized a hyper-realistic AI-generated avatar designed to promote online products and drive mass engagement. The persona had projected the image of a divorced woman owning a farm in Minas Gerais.

Martins, who had sold his belongings to fund the trip following the death of his mother, found himself without resources to return home after local radio stations and bystanders confirmed the digital nature of the persona.
